Disability Unfriendly Facilities Hampering Agenda 2030

Beit Cure International says the country needs to reflect on challenges impinging persons with disabilities if Malawi is to achieve the 2030 Development Agenda.

Nurse at the hospital, Ulemu Musasa, highlighted challenges persons with disabilities face to access facilities that are not disability friendly.

She said this in Blantyre on Tuesday during awareness activities in commemoration of this year’s International Day of Persons with Disabilities.

“We are remaining behind in empowering people with disabilities. You can agree with me that most of our facilities are not user friendly to people with disabilities. For example, people with disabilities cannot get into minibuses easily,” she said.

During the celebration of the day, the hospital offered free consultations to the people.

“We thought it wise to offer free consultations because most of the people cannot afford to pay a consultation of K20, 000 to see a doctor at our hospitals,” she said.

The Day has been commemorated under a theme ‘Promoting the participation of persons with Disabilities and their leadership; taking action on the 2030 Development Agenda”.
