Cane Cutters Accused of Fueling HIV

Authorities at Maseya area in Chikwawa have asked government and development partners to establish viable interventions targeting cane cutters who they suspect of are fueling HIV, a virus that causes AIDS.

Traditional Authority  Maseya told Zodiak Online after the World Aids Day commemoration at Berewu Primary School on Wednesday that he is shocked by reports of cane cutters having sexual activities with teenage girls with others having sexual services on credit.

Chief Maseya said the cutters are taking advantage of the deep-rooted poverty in the area to use the money they receive to coax little girls to render sexual services.

"Something must be done to stop such bad behaviors. I have also been receiving reports of some cane cutters having sexual services on credit. This has to stop," TA Maseya said.

The Chief added that he has rescued 17 girls from forced marriages in Group Village Headman Kadzumba, warning he will punish any village head that will be caught condoning such pathetic things.

Chikwawa District Council Chairperson, Clement Kamoto, said the council will woo more partners to closely engage contractors that that employ cane cutters to sensitize their workers on HIV.

Chikwawa Principal HIV and Nutrition Officer Chimbiziyani Kachali says will discuss with Aids Health Care Foundation and other influential organizations to scale up HIV activities at Berewu in order to curb new HIV infections.
