Japanese Ambassador Tips Malawi On Economic Growth

Outgoing Japanese ambassador to Malawi has tipped the country to focus much on finding ways of improving the country’s economy, other than politics.

Kae Yanagisawa made the remarks in Lilongwe Tuesday night at a farewell party, as she returns to Japan after finishing her duty in the country.

Yanagisawa said although some people may think that justice is the first and foremost important concept in politics, economic growth and development should also be prioritized.

“The political environment in Malawi has not been good for economic growth. Even though other people might want to seek justice, everyone can always consider to balance economy and politics for the country needs a stable political landscape for economic stability and growth,” said Yanagisawa.

The remarks were in reference to events that followed this year’s disputed elections.

She added, “Economic downturn often causes political instability, hence the need to strike a balance between the two, to avoid sinking economically.”

While complimenting the Japanese government for assistance in education, trade and economy sectors for example, minister of gender, disability and children affairs Mary Navicha expressed concern in the slowing economic activities the country has witnessed recently.

“What she meant was that as Malawians, we have to be united if we are to make economic gains and be independent. The court case and differences after the general elections have truly slowed us down economically,” Navicha said.

She added that Malawians need to reposition themselves on building the economy other than politicking.

Yanagisawa reminisced her stay in Malawi, branding the relationship with Malawians cordial, but not without mention of what she termed unfortunate stoning of the JICA office in Lilongwe.

She came to Malawi in 2016.
