Police Conduct, Cause for Lost Trust

Police Conduct, Cause for Lost Trust

The meeting by various community stakeholders on security in Lilongwe Thursday agreed that lack of professionalism by some law enforcers has contributed to the lost trust on these men in uniform by the citizenry.

For example during the meeting traditional and religious leaders pointed the use of force when managing angry crowds, corruption and selective justice as some of key issues leading to the sour relationship between the police and communities.

Traditional Authority M’bwatalika has expressed worry that this sour relationship has led to some places declared no-go zones for the police.

“Security has completely gone down. Traditional leaders are no longer respected, that’s why parliamentarians that are respected should talk to the youths in their constituencies to restore sanity as some places have become no-go zones for police officers,” said T/A M’bwatalika.

Parliamentarian for Lilongwe Mapuyu North Horace Chipuwa says “For example selective justice, corruption and use of force when handling incidents are the cause, although some people that were disputing the 2019 elections took advantage of the situation.”

Central Region Commissioner of Police Evalista Chisale has assured stakeholders that the police have taken a bold step to restore sanity and the lost trust.

She called upon all stakeholders such as the Civil Society and others to be on the forefront to ensure security is achieved in all areas.

“We are happy though that we have this meeting that we will identify the problem and find solutions. We are all Malawians and we need to live as one people,” said Chisale.

However according to the meeting, the police are not the only culprits as it has been established that politicians and civil society organizations also pass messages that incite violence, further derailing security.

The police have already held such meetings to Dowa, Nkhotakota and Salima.
