Chifundo Epilepsy Awareness organization Executive Director, Chifundo Petro and Epilepsy Warriors Foundation in Malawi Director, Samuel Chigamba, say are concerned that epileptic people have limited access to drugs in public facilities and are sidelined in education and social protection programs. “In this area of Ngabu mainly villages of Goma, Malikopo, and Nsomo, there many epileptic people who are living a pathetic life. We need to find ways of supporting them,” said Petro adding that time has come for the country to improve lives of people with epilepsy. On his part, Chigamba explained that transforming lives of people with epilepsy requires the formulation of a national action plan that addresses the critical issues. “We have the potential to fully participate in national development if our needs especially drugs are available,” said Chigamba. The two were speaking during the launch of Chifundo Epilepsy Awareness Foundation at Malikopo primary school in traditional authority Ngabu in Chikwawa district. A 5- year-old, Collins Mission, of Goma Village, a father who has an epileptic daughter said they have been facing a litany of challenges. Mission complained of lack of drugs at Ngabu rural hospital, hunger, education, sidelined in the social protection programs and general stigma from the public. “We are really suffering. We now ask government to assist us with drugs and food,” said Mission. It is estimated that Chikwawa alone has a population of over 300 people with epilepsy the majority of who are living a miserable life.
