Rose Chibambo Book Launched

A book that chronicles the life of one of the country’s post independent freedom fighters has been launched in Lilongwe Monday.
Author of the book Timwa Lipenga, a literature lecturer at Chancellor College said it is important for Malawians to know their history and draw lessons on how to handle national issues. The book outlines the struggle for freedom of one of the post-independent women freedom fighter Lomathinda Rose Chibambo, the first female Member of Parliament and cabinet minister, who was later dismissed from the cabinet during the cabinet crisis of 1964, for allegedly holding different views to those of President Kamuzu Banda, before going into exile. Lipenga says the book provides an opportunity for Malawians to know how patriotic Chibambo and others were. “The book is for everyone. It is for educational purposes, political as well as general knowledge. It is good for Malawians to know how some Malawians handled issues in the post-independence, taking them head-on and putting the country first,” she said. An official of the book’s publishing company Logos Open Culture, Muti Michael Phoya, said the company picked on the book for its rarely-told rich history. “You see, here is an inspiring story about somebody, a woman that many would not expect to be so bold at the time. Such kind of approach to issues and the importance for not only Malawians to know the country’s history made the book worth publishing. It also talks about culture, said Phoya. Niculin Jager, ambassador of the government of Switzerland in Zimbabwe, Malawi and Zambia who graced the launch, said the Swiss government that funded the book’s publication will continue assisting in more projects, so that the history of the country is told.
