In a statement issued December 17, 2019 Escom management says two machines are out of service at Kapichira Power Station. But EGENCO spokesperson, Moses Gwaza, earlier told us generation had moved up from about 190 Megawatts to about 250 Megawatts due to improved water levels in the Shire River. “Our generation capacity has improved especially because the country is receiving more rains in the southern region which is resulting into high water levels in Shire river where we generate electricity. “That improved capacity is good for us and we hope that going forward we should continue to have improved generation because we have rains and we have rehabilitated our machines at Kapichira station which had a problem,” Gwaza said. But in a statement publicized a short-while ago, Escom says “customers are being advised that every effortis being made to mitigate the effects of the situation. We expect the situation at Kapichira to improve by Thursday, 19 December, 2019,” reads the statement. The country has been experiencing persistent blackouts owing to, according EGENCO, low water levels in the Shire river, source of the country’s hydro-power electricity generation. Meanwhile, the country is in course of finding supplementary means of hydro-power generation that becomes unreliable especially in the summer when water levels go down in Shire river and Lake Malawi. Contacted for comment on the conflicting information Escom Public Relations Manager Innocent Chitosi said “Our engineers are working with EGENCO engineers and we have been assured that the problem will be sorted out by Thursday this week,” Chitosi said.
