Tembo, fondly called JZU, has requested people of Malawi to desist violence and prepare to accept the ruling of the courts in the presidential election case currently before the Constitutional Court in Lilongwe.

He stressed that his appeal is on both sides of the isle in the political dispute.

“Malawians went to the court to seek justice. I am optimistic that the judges handling the case will make sure justice should prevail,” he said.

Tembo said he has been following developments around the elections dispute including street protests demanding resignation of Malawi Electoral Commission chair, Dr. Jane Ansah.

He hopes that Dr. Ansah will eventually heed calls to leave the stage in the interest of national peace.

Tembo said this in an exclusive interview with Zodiak Online at his Lilongwe residence Thursday.

“…there are so many professionals in this country who can handle the position of MEC chairperson hence the need for her to resign,” he said.

Former MCP leader also urged leaders to desist from politicizing everything in their way but instead put national priorities above everything else.

“Corrupting is deep rooted in this country. Our country is failing to develop due to corruption. Let us change the way we are doing things by putting the welfare of people first,” said Tembo adding that the economy too needs serious attention as it is deteriorating and people are struggling to live.

On what he is doing now in retirement, Tembo told Zodiak Online says he spends most of his time reflecting on how he contributed to the development of the country in different sectors.

He expressed concern that schools and universities teach less of the country’s history. He remains with fond memories of Malawi’s first indigenous President, Dr. Hastings Kamuzu Banda.

“Kamuzu told me the importance of having your own house as a person. No matter how big a government or company house you are living in. Always remember to have your own house,” he said.

Tembo is in retirement after stepping down as MCP president in 2017 when he handed office to Dr. Lazarus Chakwera.

Although aging, Tembo still looks strong and in good health. Of course one leg gives him a headache once in a while.
