General Nundwe Assures of Peace

Commander of the Malawi Defense Force-MDF, General Vincent Nundwe, says the army will remain alert and ensure that internal-peace reigns in the country when the Constitutional Court eventually passes verdict on the presidential election dispute.

General Nundwe said this Monday night on the sidelines of the MDF’s 2019-end-of-Year party held at the army headquarters, Kamuzu Barracks, in Lilongwe.

With political tension remains still high in the country following the disputed May 21 presidential poll, there are fears violence could erupt in the country when judgement is passed.

Various stakeholders including the quasi-religious grouping Public Affairs Committee-PAC and non-governmental organisations have been in the forefront sensitizing people on the need to keep calm after the judgement is passed and resorting to peaceful means should the court verdict spark discontent.

For General Nundwe, who acknowledges that the police have been overwhelmed in previous crowd control operations, the MDF has the green light from Commander-in-Chief President Peter Mutharika and "a constitutional obligation" to ensure that there is peace and calm in the country even when the army's primary role is protection of the country's sovereignity.

The helplessness of the police became apparent during the Anti-Jane Ansah protests organized by the Human Rights Defenders Coalition as the law enforcers failed to take charge of situations.

"As the Malawi Defense Force, we always prepare for the worst case scenario. I can assure you that there is going to be peace in Malawi regardless of whichever way the verdict goes. We as the MDF, are prepared to make sure that the situation remains calm,” General Nundwe said.

He was hopeful that the political tension will ease and that the country will return to normal soon.

2019 has seen MDF soldiers mostly involved in dealing with internal security, a task which constitutionally falls under the Malawi Police Service - MPS.

The constitutional court has assured that within 45 days, it will ensure that the verdict of the presidential election case is out.
