E-Passport Crucial-Immigration

Principal Secretary in the ministry of Homeland Security Samuel Madula has pleaded with immigration officers to be patriotic if the country is to address the issues of illegal and irregular immigrants.

He was speaking in Salima on Sunday night at the end of year party for the Immigration department.

Madula said the immigration department is one key institution in as far as the country’s security is concerned hence needs support for it to effectively discharge its duties.

He however acknowledged there are challenges in the department such as transport due to insufficient funding despite it making a significant contribution to the national pulse.

“These people stay in boarders but they do not have houses, let alone transport, they are supposed to be traveling and patrolling in some unchattered routes in the boarder districts, our friends in Mozambique they have cars and they can easily do patrols, here we are finding it hard imagine in Mchinji they only have one car,” said Madula.

Meanwhile Immigration Department Director General, Masauko Medi, believes the introduction of the e-passport is one sure way of tracking such people.

Medi acknowledged increased allegations of corruption among immigration officers. He bemoaned lack of patriotism among of officers who allow and aide foreigners such as asylum seekers to access the Malawi passport.

“If you look at the current passport is a machine readable passport but now we are talking of an e passport because it will have the facial and finger prints embedded in the passport and if you look globally in other countries you would go even without a visa because it is more trusted,” he said.

According to Medi the department is expected to printout the first e passport in the second week by 14th January.

At the end of year party there was also prize presentation to winners of different sporting activities in the Director General’s Trophy.
