Workers for ADMARC in the north and central regions separately met their new Acting CEO, Felix Jumbe, days ago and in discussions with him was an observation that the corporation meant to serve Malawians was being abused by politicians.

The workers hence demanded of Jumbe assurance that the institution would, once again, reclaim its lost glory by focusing on its’ service mission as a corporation.

“It is sad to see what was then one of the biggest aggregators in the country sinking just like that” said one of the workers who did not want to be identified.

The workers said the company cannot be expected to make profit when it is being abused by politicians and surviving on commissions.

But while pledging to revamp the institution, Jumbe said the blame on the declined performance of Admarc was for the nation which must also work to revive it.

“We need to reclaim the national aggregation, start processing crops, selling inputs and also intercede between the farmer and local and international markets,” he said.

Jumbe said, other than underperformance brought about by players in the industry, Admarc was dealt a severe blow by the Structural Adjustment Program championed by the World Bank and the International Monetary Fund –IMF-a few decades ago.

He said market liberalization under the program dealt the Malawi economy a blow.

“The liberalized implementation of the Structural Adjustment Program was done wrongly. The moment they changed the operations of Admarc, that is where we missed it. That is what has left Admarc in this predicament,” said Jumbe.

On how Admarc is addressing the problem of scarcity of grain in some depots.

Meanwhile, on Friday Jumbe was in the central region where he assured Malawians Admarc has adequate maize until March although it is being rationed for sell.

Jumbe also assured Admarc workers that the corporation would bounce back.

Admarc requires about 20 thousand metric tonnes of maize stocks every month.
