Anti-Quota Protesters Petition Mzuzu Education Division
The Anti-quota Movement today presented a petition at the Northern region education division offices in Mzuzu to stress their dissatisfaction with a system they say disadvantages those deserving meritoriously.
The petition this time was particularly about what the movement considers unfair selection of learners into public secondary schools. The group accuses government of employing the quota system through the back door.
The group claims that government tampers with examination results at the Malawi National Examinations Board in order for favored regions to send the most learners to the best schools.
HRDC leadership including, Timothy Mtambo and Gift Trapence, UTM member Chidanti Malunga and Aford member Yeremiah Chihana participated in the demonstrations.
Charles Kajoloweka, Youth and Society-YAS-chair who is also member of the Anti-Quota Movement said “Don’t be cheated. The Maneb results you see are not a true reflection of how learners have scored.
“They are tampered with and doctored to have their students (they favor) selected to good schools,”.
Kajoloweka alleged that students from the Southern part of Malawi are considered to have scored a distinction on getting a 45 per cent of an examination paper while those from the North qualify for a distinction after scoring 85 per cent and above.
“These figures is what they use. That is why we have been demanding marked examination sheets,” said Kajoloweka.
HRDC’s Timothy Mtambo likened quota to genocide and apartheid saying it is high time government gave equal access to education opportunities to all citizens.
