Although protestors generally marched peacefully from Katoto Secondary School grounds through the Mzuzu highway to the civic offices, one incident stood a roof and compelled police fire in the air and detonate teargas canisters for their safety.

The march begun on a sunny morning rains that started pouring a few hours but did not detour protestors from their intention of delivering a petition at the civic offices.

Tension arose on the way when, despite heavy military presence, some individuals begun stoning FDH Bank and the Northern Region police headquarters pricking the police to retaliate fearing for the waste and the army making some arrests.

There protesters also protested when MDF soldiers apprehended two protestors who were seen destroying sign posts, as protestors demanded release of their colleagues.

The two were released after lengthy negotiations.

HRDC chairperson for the North, Happy Mhango, said the focus of the Thursday demonstrations diverted from calls for MEC chairperson, Dr. Jane Ansah, to step down to now demanding electoral justice following the attempted bribing of judges by some sympathizers of the DPP for the court to sway ruling in their favor.

“We want to let ACB know that as Malawians we are following everything and what we want is the arrest of the suspects that wanted to influence the elections case judgment. This is a straight forward case,” said Mhango.

He added that calls for Jane Ansah to step down still stand and would return in future protests.

Politicians, the academia, business persons, and the general civic from different parts of Mzuzu and beyond took part in the Mzuzu protests.

Despite calls for peace, however after delivering the petition on their way back some people presumably part of the group that joined the HRDC protests stoned Farmers’ World at Lubinga, Sana and SaveMat Superettes.
