Food insecure families from the area of Traditional Authorities Kilipula and Mwakaboko in Karonga district had all the reasons to smile after the Muslim World League made available a thousand bags of free maize for their use.

The provisions were a clear relief to the family recipients.

Frano Silumbu comes from the area of T/A Kilipula. He was all hails for the Islamic organization for the provision of the relief food saying it has come at the right time as families are yet to recover from floods that swept away their crop fields last year.

“Government should consider increasing the number of beneficiaries for the food distribution program. It is clear that people will have low yields due to erratic rains being experienced in the area,” said Silumbu.

He then called upon people entrusted with responsibility of distribution humanitarian assistance to be impartial so that only deserving households benefit.

Last year alone over 8,000 people were affected by various forms of natural disasters in Karonga including floods and strong winds.

Director of Response and Recovery at DODMA, Harris Kachale, told Zodiak Online that the provision of relief food is aimed at cushioning households that were left out from the 2019 Malawi Vulnerability Assessment Committee report from hunger.

“Government will do everything possible to ensure that families affected by natural disasters benefit from relief food distribution and cash transfers to improve their food security levels,” said Kachali.

On his part, parliamentarian for Karonga North, Mungasulwa Mwambande, said the relief items had come at the right time when most of his constituents are at risk of facing hunger because of flash floods.

“I urge other organizations to emulate the example set by Muslim World League for the provision of humanitarian assistance…during this lean period,” he said.

The latest Malawi Vulnerability Assessment Committee report indicates that a total of 1.8 million people are food insecure in Malawi owing to multiple factors.
