The remarks were made when Tovwirane Organization which has been supporting the women held a review meeting on how they fared as it phases out the women empowerment project it was implementing with funding from HIVOS.

Tembo who has been trying her luck for two times now without making it as a councilor for Perekezi ward in Mzimba says Malawi must take such deliberate steps as it in other African counties like Rwanda.

“The major set-back for women is always finance, and I think the only way out is a deliberate introduction of the quota system on women representation otherwise political parties luck the will to advance the campaign. There is more talk than actions,” said Tembo.

Tovwirane Organization women empowerment project officer, Cecelia Chivunga, while concurring with the views of Tembo said their is more work to be done especially in changing societal beliefs and cultural inclinations.

“The quota for women in decision making positions including political ones would help but let's also strive to change mindsets especially in patilineal culture where women play second fiddle to men,” said Chivunga.

Tovwirane organization has been running a women empowerment project with funding from HIVOS in Mzimba, Rumphi,Nkhata bay and Mzuzu city.
