MEC Commissioner Nkosi Yet to Step Down After Pledge

Commissioner Mary Nkosi of the Malawi Electoral Commission MEC is yet to step down from her position despite a public pledge to do so before the Public Appointments Committee, PAC of parliament.

Commissioner Nkosi told a parliamentary inquiry into the controversial 2019 tripartite elections that she would resign for her role a commissioner for mismanaging the poll results.

The high court sitting as a constitutional court in Lilongwe nullified the presidential results on 3 February, 2020 calling for fresh elections.

Last week the commissioner was spotted in Blantyre during a National Election Consultative Forum NECOF.

When queried in an interview, Bishop Nkosi said, “Since that time I am not taking any interviews, I can’t comment, am sorry, thank you very much!”

Blantyre based social and political commentator Victor Chipofya has observed Commissioner Nkosi’s behavior lacks integrity.

“She could have resigned the very first time she not the irregularities during the results management process, it could have been a pointer to Malawians. Now she goes telling PACto resign, we expected her to do so, her actions lack integrity,” said Chipofya.

President Peter Mutharika is under intense pressure to fire the MEC commissioners and Chairperson Dr. Jane Ansah following the recommendation by PAC of parliament under the instructions of the constitutional Court.
