Jenda and Embangweni ‘Blood Sucker’ Violence: Property Destroyed

Property has been vandalized and destroyed around Jenda and Embangweni Trade Centres by angry members of the communities who allege that some people are in the area ‘sucking blood’ of citizens through magic for reasons bordering on myths.

Monday night into Tuesday, people around Embangweni Trade Centre went on rampage setting fire to a lodge and shops belonging to a business man they allege has been involved in the ‘blood sucking’ incidents.

This followed similar commotion at Jenda where police had to fire teargas up until late in the night to disperse angry people who damaged police offices, burned down the road block and looted police houses in their demand for a suspected blood sucker.

A police office in the area was also damaged.

Aisha Chavula of Zanyata  Chavula  Village told Zodiak Online people in the area are now living in fear and sleeping outside in groups to fend off the alleged attackers

“We are really living in fear. These days we are sleeping in groups the way we do at a funerals. People have cut trees to block roads so that vehicles are not passing,” said Chavula.

Northern region police spokesperson, Peter Kalaya, confirmed the two incidents but did not have finer details handy at the time of our enquiry.

Rumors about blood suckers begun early this month in parts of Mzimba close to the border with Zambia where recently came stories about killings by gassing.
