About 900 families were trapped by the floods early this year with over 300 households rendered homeless, before being relocated to camps by the department of disaster management affairs.

One of the community representative Boaz Kalengezeka disclosed to Zodiak Online that they are selling the relief items because they also need the money to buy other basic amenities.

“It’s true some people are selling items to vendors to make earns meet and buy some basic necessities for their families, Kakuyu being an island there was a lot of business there, now people have no economic activity,” said Kalengezeka.

Kalengezeka has since implored government to assist them in finding a better place where they can relocate and restart their lives.

Speaking at an event when Lions Club of Dwangwa made a donation of assorted items including; food, maize floor and blankets to over 200 homeless households, Nkhotakota district council chairperson Austin Chunga said it is worrying to note that other survivors are reportedly selling relief items despite being in dire need.

“I have warned them against selling these relief items, these donations come to assist those affected and selling them is a retrogressive,” said Chunga.

Masindisa Sambo Dwangwa Lions Club while echoing the same sentiments said their organisation is currently also looking at other avenues to support other survivors in the area.

Lions Club second vice district governor for Malawi and Mozambique Victor Gondwe said the Lions Club donation was made with support from the Lions International Foundation to a tune of 10 000 (USD) United States dollars, about 7.2 million kwacha reaching out to over 200 destitute households.

Other organizations such as Red Cross Society of Malawi, DoDMA and well wishers have responded to calls to bail out the Kakuyu flood survivors in Nkhotakota.
