NGO Calls For Mzuzu City CEO Resignation
The Civil Society Network on Accountability and Transparency is demanding the resignation of Mzuzu city Council chief executive and finance director for failing to perform their duties and gross mismanagement of council funds.
The network which says is concerned with the status of Mzuzu city has since given the two officials 48 hours to leave office failing which the group will take an unspecified action.
The networks chairperson Kinnear Mlowoka said they want all the issues highlighted in the petition to be addressed.
Among the issues, the network claims the council has failed to manage development funds totaling K98 million and K24 million for Constituency Development Fund.
“We have arrived at this decision after having engaged the council on several occasions to sort out the mess at the civic office. A lot of funds have been mismanaged and the council is failing to produce clear statements of how the money was used." Said Mlowoka.
The council is also faulted for dubious sells of city plots by some members of staff at the secretariat, at a time the council is failing to generate revenue for its operations and paying staff salaries as workers go for months without pay.
“The status of Mzuzu is not that of a city. Piles of garbage are everywhere and street vending is also uncontrollable an indication enough that some people are not doing their job.”
Last month city council staff closed the department of planning and development on allegations that the officials from the department have been dubiously selling city plots. Two senior officials from the department have since been suspended.
But when contacted Mzuzu city chief executive officer Dr. Macloud Kadammanja said he is yet to be served with the petition which the network members claim to have sent.
