Financial challenges continue to rock Mzuzu city council as workers down tools for the third time this year in protest over four month’s unpaid salaries.

The workers say they are annoyed over the council’s failure to regard their welfare and find a lasting solution to their problems.

One of the employees Hopkins Makhaya said despite going without pay they have always reported for work but the council seem not to appreciate their service and sort out its mess.

"Since we entered this year we have not received any salary, we come here in empty stomach and work, but now things have gotten out of hand we want our salaries." said Makhaya.

But council authorities have blamed the city's residents for failure to pay city rates which is the main source of revenue for the council for its operations as well as salaries for workers.

The council’s human resource officer Clement Samela said the council needs about K52 million for its operations and salaries, but currently only able to collect about K40 thousand per month from city rates which is not enough.

"We have people occupying our markets but they don't pay market fees, others don't even honor city rates, where are we going to find money to pay our staff?"

“It is even worrisome that the same people that do not want to pay city rates liter the city and they expect the council to find resources to collect all the garbage which is proving even costly,” wondered Samela.

Currently after failing to sell some of its plots to secure revenue for paying salaries, human resources officer for the council Clement Salema says the council has now turned to the banks for a K300 million loan to pay the workers and solve some of its problems.

"We have approached some bank for a loan, they have promised to give us K100 million as a start which we intend to pay salaries for the workers and also invest in our projects for a sustainable income generation." said Samela.

The council has resorted to the banks after it failed to sell some of its plots to generate some income as investors never showed interest to buy the offered plots.
