The Church and Society's Executive Director Moses Mkandawire said this at a press briefing in Mzuzu.

This is in reaction to last Friday’s ugly scenes where the two security agents engaged each other in gunfire across the country when the Police moved in to disarm the Prisons following the latter’s strike over their welfare.

He finds dialogue the only best way to end their differences amicably for proper cohesion.

“We need to bring the trust between the two security agents, there is no way each institution can work on their own so what we want to do is engage both institutions, it is a concern for us that we don’t want the conflict to turn violent. This process is urgently neded,” Mkandawire said.

Both National Police Spokesperson James Kadadzera and National Prison Spokesperson Chimwemwe Shaba could not be drawn to comment.

Ugly scenes were recorded Friday in Zomba, Blantyre, Mzuzu and Nkhatabay as the two security agents exchanged fire at the time the Malawi Police invaded the country’s prisons to disarm their counterparts following their sit in.

This happened in full view of civilians in some parts of the country.

The Church and Society’s reaction come a day after the Vice President Dr Saulos Klaus Chilima condemned the same in his speech to the nation Sunday evening, where he has ordered for a probe into the same and bring to book the one who gave the Malawi Police that order.
