Mtambo Claims Ansah Resignation Ploy to Rig Fresh Presidential Election

Former civil society leader turned politician Timothy Mtambo who has been calling for the ouster of Justice Dr. Jane Ansah as chairperson for the Malawi Electoral Commission MEC, has gone back on his word saying her resignation now; is a ploy by the governing Democratic Progressive Party DPP to rig the fresh presidential poll.

Mtambo claims that his political grouping Citizens for Transformation CFT has intelligence that suggests to the allegation.

We are suspicious for her late resignation, you know rigging is a long term process, that they decided she will leave after sometime when we are close to the elections, so that it should be difficult for the new commissioners to clean the system.” said Mtambo.

He added, “We at CFT are saying and have said it before, we need a credible human resource; we need a clean system not the current commissioners, we need them to go!”

DPP Director of Elections Ben Phiri told us this morning that Mambo’s remarks are baseless and regrettable coming from a man who is afraid of the fresh election.

“It would only take a person whose mental capacity is low to comment on such allegations. Every allegation must have a basis; and where there is no basis it takes us back to the usual rigging rhythm that we have heard since 1994 (the dawn of multiparty democracy) without any sort of evidence”.

On the commissioners Phiri said they have no problem going to the polls with current crop of commissioners.

The CFT has also demanded an independent audit led by the country’s developmental partners into the MEC’s voter’s roll which he said MEC is refusing to undertake.

In reaction, MEC spokesperson Sangwani Mwafulirwa said CFT should write the commission formally if they have issues and not rush to the media.

President Peter Mutharika has since penned the Judicial Service Commission for a possible appointment as MEC chairperson and notified political parties to nominate people to constitute MEC commissioners.
