He rallied masses that thronged his meetings to cast their ballot to retain President Peter Mutharika, in the fresh presidential election.

The young Muluzi who has been in the region for a week said he was impressed with the support the Democratic Alliance is receiving.

“I have never seen such support for President Peter Mutharika and myself. Am proud to be serving alongside his Excellency and promise that the development projects that this government has been delivering in the region will continue,” said Muluzi.

Speaking at Nkhata Bay boma, Muluzi said people in the northern region have no reason to vote for a Malawi Congress Party candidate given their experiences under the one party rule.

He told multitudes that attended his rallies to retain Mutharika as president arguing that the DPP and UDF regimes have developed the region compared to the MCP.

“I was reminding them that the MCP was in power for the past 31 years. They were collecting out tax and even made us buy party tickets but never developed this region in contrast with developments that the UDF and DPP did in 20 years of rule,” he said.

Muluzi has also decried continued political violence perpetrated by youths.

“The osaopa (don’t’ fear) mantra has been entrenched in the younger generation. They think that they need to stone, they should use violence or use foul language and intimidation to participate in the democratic process.

“We use the ballot to change governments,” Muluzi said.

Earlier the running mate paid tribute political greats; Orton Chirwa, Aleke Banda and the March 3, 1959 martyrs from the lakeshore district.

DPP vice president for the north Goodall Gondwe and cabinet ministers, Jappie Mhango and Symon Vuwa Kaunda and other UDF leaders accompanied Muluzi on the campaign trail.
