MCP-UTM alliance presidential candidate, Dr. Lazarus Chakwera, on Tuesday took his campaign to Nkhata Bay where multitudes turned up to hear the governance plan of the nine parties forming the alliance when he is ushered into office after June 23.

Chakwera took to the podium describing as “rubbish” the recruitment exercise which government has embarked on and turned out disastrous after over a hundred people got injured in Mzuzu following a stampede that ensued.

He said, the manner in which the exercise was organized only demonstrated the kind of leadership that is there at the moment.

The Mutharika administration is under criticism for the manner in which the ministry of health hopes to recruit lower grades staff to support in the Covid-19 management.

Chakwera said, again the exercise has vindicated the opposition on massive levels of youth unemployment for which the alliance has pledged to create a million jobs.

On the agenda of MCP-UTM alliance, Chakwera said his alliance guarantees rule of law and development that benefits every citizen in the country without regard to tribalism and regionalism.

“The constitution is the supreme law of the land; No-one is above the law. The constitution is above the President, the courts and parliament. When you elect me President, the last thing I will do is to disrespect the constitution. At such a point, I would step down.

“We must respect the law, not people. We must work to ensure that development is for all,” he told his audience adding that he wanted to lead a nation that did not beg.

“Begging is dehumanizing. I want us to be economically independent. We must have freedom to develop. People don’t have to be thankful to leadership when government does its job. Governments are meant to serve the people. That is their role,” he said.

On reports that the MCP-UTM alliance has resolved to seek the direction of the courts on President Peter Mutharika’s reappointment of two commissioners who served on the immediate-past Malawi Electoral Commission, Chakwera said: “There must be a consequence for breaking the law. Our lawyers are advising on the best way going forward. We believe in the rule of law. We believe in perfection”.

In Nkhata Bay, Chakwera was accompanied by alliance partner Peoples Party president Dr. Joyce Banda who, when she took to the podium, told the audience that the choice of Dr. Chakwera in the next election is a choice for a united Malawi.
