Govt. Takes a Swipe at JB for “Insensitive Remarks”

Banda: No COVID-19 in Malawi Banda: No COVID-19 in Malawi file footage

Government has described as insensitive and misleading remarks made by former president Joyce Banda that there is no COVID-19 case in the country.

The former president told a gathering at a TONSE Alliance rally in Nkhata-Bay on Tuesday that the current regime is mismanaging funds meant to fight the pandemic, demanding government to account for the funds meant for fighting the virus.

“Is there Corona or not, is it true or fake. We have heard that there is corona virus the whole world. But God has favored Malawi, it is not here yet. We want to know where the donor money is going,” spoke Banda.

This has displeased government whom through its spokesperson also Minister of Information
Mark Botomani says what the former president said has potential to derail efforts to fight pandemic as some people trust her.

“I am surprised that am being deliberately misunderstood. I said two days ago that yes we have Covid 19 but somehow strangely is not being affected as the western world.   African countries are not losing as many people as the western world. It is possible we have not reached the peak. But as of now God has favored us,” says Botoman.

However, the former president a few days later told Zodiak that she was deliberately misunderstood.

“I am surprised that am being deliberately misunderstood. I said two days ago that yes we have Covid 19 but somehow strangely is not being affected as the western world.   African countries are not losing as many people as the western world. It is possible that we have not reached the peak. But as of now God has favored us,” explained Banda.

Developmental partners and other stakeholders including the quasi religious body Public Affairs Committee have condemned politicizing the COVID 19.
