Only days to polling in the fresh presidential election, government says it is grappling with sourcing funds to meet K8.7bn deficit on the Malawi Electoral Commission-MEC, budget.

In an interview with Zodiak Media, Treasury spokesperson Williams Banda despite assuring Malawians that government is doing all it can to hold the election, failed short  on disclosing how much it has sourced so far, or how it intends to square the deficit.

“As at now we can’t say that we have the money or not, but government is prioritizing the activities of MEC. As you’re aware it’s a governance issue and it is the wish of Malawians to go to the polls so it’s our noble task to make sure that those obligations are fulfilled,” said Banda.

The ministry of finance official also appealed to organizations that have potential to assist government bankroll the fresh poll to do so with haste.

Malawi Congress Party MCP-UTM publicity secretary Dr. Joseph Chidanti-Malunga speaking on behalf of the TONSE Alliance said these remarks are surprising.

“This is a surprise to us! A few days ago as TONSE Alliance, we met the Commission and the MEC chairperson (Chifundo Kachale) indicated to us there are no financial hiccups what so ever. As far as we are concerned there is no financial hiccup as treasury is suggesting.

“Any move to try to stop the elections with the understanding that there are no funds, we will not accept,” said Chidanti-Malunga.

DPP-UDF Alliance counterpart Nicholas Dausi refused to comment on the matter.

The judge Kachale Commission is meeting electoral stakeholders on Thursday, June 18, to provide updates for the election slated for Tuesday, June 23, 2020.
