Mzimba DPP Monitor Arrested Over Voter Certificates, National IDs

In Mzimba district, a Democratic Progressive Party-DPP monitor is in police custody for an an alleged electoral related offence.

She was arrested at Mbalachanda Polling Center after she was allegedly found with six national identity cards and six voter certificates.

District Commissioner for Mzimba, Emmanuel Bambe, who is the District Returning Officer, says police are meanwhile probing to get to the bottom of the matter.

The woman has been identified as Mary Banda of Kajapi village in the area of Inkosi Chindi.

She is now at Mbalachanda Police Unit.

Meanwhile, members of the Malawi Defense Force have had to, for a while, reserve time to go and choose who they want to be the president of Malawi.

MDF soldiers from 3rd Battalion were captured in many parts of the country exercising this right.

In Nkhata Bay, our reporter Alex Banda also had a chance to witness prisoners cast their votes in the fresh presidential election.

One prisoner, Willard, said he is delighted that he had the chance to vote in the court-sanctioned election.

The fresh presidential election follows a disputed May 2019 presidential election which the High Court and later the Supreme Court of Appeal found to have been marred with irregularities.

Malawi Vice President Dr. Saulos Chilima has cast his vote at St. Thomas Anglican Church Polling Centre in Lilongwe.

He hopes to vote out his estranged boss President Peter Mutharika and instead send to state house opposition Malawi Congress Party Dr. Lazarus Chakwera with whom Chilima has gone into an electoral alliance in the fresh presidential election.

Dr. Chakwera has cast his vote in his home village at Malembo on the outskirts of Lilongwe.

His main rival President Mutharika shall also be voting in his home village at Goliati in Thyolo district. Atupele Muluzi his running mate will be in Machinga district.

Mbakuwaku Movement for Development candidate Peter Kuwani has already voted in his home village at Kamwendo in Lilongwe.
