This came out in a panel discussion by the National Planning Commission on Zodiak Broadcasting Station on Friday where among others leaders have been faulted for the failures of the Vision 2020.
The experts comprising political and governance commentator Dr Henry Chingaipe, Chief Economist at NPC Sipho Billiati and Priscilla Chimwere a member at NPC, are of the view that Vision 2063 is achievable only if those in leadership positions put the welfare of the country at heart.
They say Vision 2020 failed to materialize due to a lack of political will among the country’s leaders, who have time and again taken matters of the state as personal benefits.
During the panel discussion, political and governance expert Dr Henry Chingaipe observed that mind-set change coupled with a sense of responsibility among leaders will be key to the achievement of set targets in the Vision 2063.
Priscilla Chimwere a member at the National Planning Commission shares similar sentiments. She however feels this response should be two fold as the change needed requires both a willing leadership and a responsive people.
Taking his turn, Chief Economist at the National planning Commission Sipho Billiati noted that there has been an urban bias in the manner in which government shares development. He feels the approach must change to allow the rural areas that have 80% of the population enjoy equal share in the country’s development agenda.
The discussion on Effective Governance Systems by the National Planning Commission comes at a time Malawi has ushered in a new government by the Tonse Alliance through the 23rd June Fresh presidential Poll which promised much during its campaign.
