A Commission of Enquiry instituted by the Karonga District Council on alleged dubious distribution of public land has implicated three ward councilors for pocketing 2.4 million kwacha from vendors as allocation fees.

During a full council meeting held on Saturday  members of the district council engaged in a heated debate on whether the three councilors should face the long arm of the law or pay back the money.

Senior Chief Mwilang'ombe suggested that the trio face prosecution for indulging in criminal activities while other members especially councilors protested that they should pay back the money.

"This issue is criminal in nature, let the courts intervene, we cannot allow our district to be dented because of few individuals," said Mwilang'ombe.

Paramount Chief Kyungu implored on the councilors to be exemplary by desisting from corrupt practices if the district is to see tangible development.

"Am urging the new elected leadership of the country not to indulge in corrupt practices saying corruption retards development," said Paramount Kyungu.

District Commissioner for Karonga Paul Kalilombe warned council members to tread carefully insisting that any wrong conduct will be dealt with.

Newly elected Council Chairperson Steve Simsokwe of Chilanga ward asked the elected representatives to put aside their political differences and work as a team.

"My first take will be to meet young people who have been engaging in demonstrations that have furnished the councils image," says Chilanga.

Meanwhile, District Commissioner Paul Kalilombe is expected to present a report on the same to the line Ministry for scrutiny.
