ACB Investigating Purpotedly "Missing" MRA Vehicles

The Anti-Corruption Bureau ACB says has started investigations into the purported MRA missing vehicles that are reportedly being dumped randomly.

The ACB Director General Reyneck Matemba says the bureau has been moved to action having noted a growing interest among Malawians to know more about the purportedly missing “MRA” vehicles.

Matemba says it is really surprising to see such expensive cars being dumped in most cases random places across the country.

“We would like to know what is happening, as in why the people are dumping the vehicles like that. We have not received any official complaint on the matter but we are following what is happening as well. We know that the police are doing something; they are taking in the vehicles once found. We are also doing our part, we would like to establish what is happening,” explained Matemba.

Meanwhile one of the vehicles, a Totoya Prado TX registration number BW 688 was on Wednesday spotted in Chilinde 2, Lilongwe by residents there, after another Toyota Prado TX Registration Number BW 689 was found abandoned at Mount Pleasant in Blantyre.

One of the residents Harry Witness Mombanya, told us they reported the matter to the police after failing to get clear information from a driver of the vehicle around 10 pm Wednesday night.

According to Mombanya, the residents verified the vehicle was one of the purportedly missing MRA vehicles, which is also on the list circulating on social media.

“We were surprised to see the car parked there for over three hours, that’s when we decided to check it, having seen the type of car. That’s when we noted that MRA is the cars policy holder. The one driving the car also confirmed to us the car is the one on the list of missing vehicles. That’s when we decided to take him and the car to Kawale Police,” explained Mombanya.

Zodiak finds that the car was assigned to the Ministry of Finance.

A visit to Kawale Police Station Thursday afternoon found the vehicle gone with one officer in confidence confirming it was really there but some high profile citizens came around and had it released.

We could not get the Police comment as that in charge has already left the station at the time.

Zodiak has been reliably informed that MRA has been buying vehicles since 2014, which end up being used by unidentified people in government.

For instance, one of the vehicles purchased, a Toyota TX Registration Number BS 5858 was in use by the former Commissioner General.

Meanwhile, the Malawi Revenue Authority told us earlier in the week that they are also investigating the matter, which emerged through social media earlier in the week.
