They have for over three months now been demanding removal of some of their authorities among them former Chief Executive Officer Dr. Mcloud Kadam’manja, who they allege was corrupt and misappropriated council resources.

Even-though he has been moved, the staff now say are not satisfied saying nothing has changed at the council so far.

Speaking during a press briefing in Mzuzu, Chairperson for the National Civil Society Platform on Policy and Advocacy Initiative Kinnear Mlowoka says the Mzuzu City Council is currently in shambles and needs to be audited and that the country’s graft busting body investigates the alleged corrupt practices at the council.

"The correction of the previous financial year had a shortfall, they only corrected 35%. It is chaotic and has jeopardized almost all services in the city. Look at sanitation and hygiene around this city," said Mlowoka.

Spokesperson for Mzuzu City McDonald Gondwe has welcomed the idea of an audit saying it will help boost the council’s performance.

"We are ready for investigations and the suggested audit. We feel it may help in ensuring that every penny of the council is accounted for and put to good use," said Gondwe.

Mzuzu City Council is among the least performing councils in the country with most of its services such as sanitation and hygiene as well as staff welfare failing.
