Ex-MDF Soldiers Call for Governments Support After Last Mission; Rwandan Genocide

Ex- Malawi Defense Force(MDF) soldiers who went for United Nations Peace Keeping Mission in Rwanda during the 1995 Genocide has appealed for Malawi Government to consider their welfare after 26 years without support.
Corporal Amon Chimaliro 45, Number 11734 of Chibunya Village, in the area of Traditional Authority (TA) Fukamapiri in Nkhatabay district has disclosed to Zodiak online Thursday that since he was forced to retire on medical grounds after a gunshot on his left leg government paid him K15, 000 only in compensation for the injury.

"I am one of the soldiers who went in Rwanda on peace keeping mission, I retired on medical grounds because I was shot in the left leg in 1995," he recalled.

He adds that "Since  then, I have never received any support from government as someone who carried the country's flag in fighting for people's lives. I was only given K15,000 compensation for sustainance for 11 years and eleven months," he lamented.

Corporal Chimaliro further disclosed that he did not ask to retire but he was forced.

He said he did not know where his money was going.

Corporal Amon Chimaliro who has a family of six children, also lamented that he has been living a miserable life since he left MDF.

He has since pleaded with President Dr.Lazarus Chakwera's government to intervene on the matter.

"Some retired soldiers have government funded houses to live a decent life but I have nothing to show for. I want government to give me support so I can at least enjoy my legacy," he added.

When contacted, MDF Spokesperson Lieutenant Colonel Paul Chiphwanya says he was not aware of any development relating to this matter.

He has since advised Corporal Number 11734 to forward his concerns to his office.

But Corporal Chimaliro says all his efforts to get the authorities attention to his matter have hit a hard rock.
