MP Decries Slow Project Implementation in Likoma

Member of Parliament for Likoma and Chizumulu Islands Christopher Ashemes Songwe has faulted the council secretariat's failure to meet some procurement and implementation standards, for the delays in the completion of several development projects on the Islands.

The MP addressed members of the full council on Monday.

Songwe noted that out of seven projects which were earmarked for implementation in 2019/2020 financial year only one, a rehabilitation of the 14 million kwacha Mbungo Road has been completed this far.

On the other hand, Chairperson of the council Ernest Gulu has attributed this failure to a lack of coordination between the council authorities and the villagers on projects needed, where contractors are deployed to communities without the villager’s knowledge.

He also notes the tendency of duplication and handpicking of contractors as another contributing factor to failed service delivery.

Meanwhile, construction of an under-five clinic in Chizumulu, teachers' houses at Chima, as well as St. Peters and Mbungo Primary schools are some of the projects yet to be completed.
