Likoma and Chizumulu Islanders have rejected a request by their Member of Parliament to reopen the District Health Offices (DHO) which they sealed during the last month's demonstrations pushing government to transfer six officers including the DHO.

They were being accused of mismanaging about 6 million kwacha of Covid-19 management between April and May this year.

The Islanders took to the streets last month after the district council secretariat failed to provide an accountability report when they demanded to see quotations, delivery note, cash receipts, name of the supplier as well as procurement committee members that approved the purchase of Covid-19 essentials.

It is alleged that the DHO and council secretariat accountant proceeded with the procurement process without approval.

On Tuesday the parliamentarian Christopher Ashemes Songwe told members at a full council meeting that the ministry responsible was considering their demands, therefore, should re-open the office as health service delivery has been paralyzed.

Meanwhile, chairperson for Area Development Committee (ADC) Mathews Manyuka and other stakeholders have put their foot down saying they will not reopen the office unless government acts on their concerns.

They have given government until 31st August 2020, to come up with a tangible response.
