DODMA Bails Out NkhataBay Destitutes

The Department of Disaster Management Affairs- DoDMA has bailed out about 52 families whose houses and property were torched in a fierce fight between two villages over land (fishing beach) which saw two people killed last Monday in NkhataBay.

District Disaster Officer Taonga Kamanga confirmed to Zodiak Online that each of the registered affected families has received a 50 Kilogram bag of rice, a plastic bucket, 4 plastic plates, and 5 plastic cups together with a 9.5-meter plastic roll for roofing.

This has pleased Group Village Headman Nkungulo and Village Headwoman Kalonga from the area. They have however appealed for more support from well wishing individuals, organizations and government.

“After the fighting young people torched my belongings, including clothes foodstuffs and even my shoes, as you can see (pointing at her feet) am walking barefoot,” said an elderly woman Jane Nkhoma.

Innocent villagers from Nkhole under village Headwoman Kalonga are the most affected with houses and property torched, farm animals slaughtered boats and other fishing gear destroyed in the crossfire with neighboring Chingaga village over land.

The villagers have gone for 7 days without proper food and a blanket for the cold nights.

The Department of Disaster Management Affairs DoDMA has since provided the 52 households and 2 simple blankets which are not enough for some large families.

New Nkhata Bay Police Officer-In-Charge Assistant Commissioner McPherson Nthenda has assured the communities in the area of continued police presence.

“I would like to tell you that we will continue to provide security in this area. We will ensure that peace coupled with law and order is restored," added Nthenda.

About 20 people were arrested in connection to the bloody fight. They are yet to be charged.
