At the handover ceremony of the facility on Wednesday, Malaŵi Red Cross Society President Levison Changole said the facility is part of the institution's package in complimenting governments' efforts in fighting the pandemic. 

Changole said the society has also provided equipment and Personal Protective Equipment - PPEs to be used at the facility. 

"We were approached by the Ministry of Health to help in the provision of these treatment centers here in Mzimba and other districts like Mangochi,” said Changole.

He said Malaŵi has always found challenges especially in times of such crises where there is a need for isolating the patients.

"This center is a standard one as it has room for both genders - female and male at the same time its got room for young ones and expectant mothers,” added Changole. 

Since the advent of Covid-19, society has been providing interventions in message dissemination using their volunteers and the provision of protective equipment.

According to Changole, the institution has also renovated other health facilities such as the Kamuzu Central Hospital.

Meanwhile, Acting Director of Health and Social Services at the M’mbelwa District Council Dr. Prince Chirwa commended Malaŵi Red Cross Society for the support saying the with a decline in Covid-19 cases the facility will now carter for all other infectious diseases.

"We are excited with the renovated building as you know the district has not registered any Covid-19 case for two weeks now and we don't have any active case so the building will generally assist us in accommodating all sorts of infectious diseases in the future,” said Dr. Chirwa. 

Since the advent of Covid-19, Mzimba South has registered 153 cases with three deaths with a 100% recovery rate.
