The Youth and Society has challenged young people in the country to use their numerical strength in advancing their youth agenda.

Speaking at the training of councilors and sector heads in Karonga over the weekend, YAS Project Officer Dalitso Magelegele said despite youths forming the bulk of the country's population, their representation in decision-making processes is worrisome.

Magelegele observed that his organization thought of equipping elected and appointed leaders in political accountability and youth development instruments so that they incorporate issues affecting young people in their programming.

"As Youth and Society, we are determined to see an improved representation of young people in local governance structures," said Magelegele.

On his part, Director of Planning and Development at Karonga district council David Gondwe says the council highly values people as key players in development.

"We are going to make sure that youths are put at the helm of decentralized structures such as Area Development Committees," said Gondwe.

According to Gondwe, Karonga has less than 30 percent of young people in local governance structures.

The organization is currently implementing Democracy in Young Hands project in Mzuzu City and Karonga district targeting 25 wards.
