UTM Condemns Hostile By-Election Victory in Karonga

UTM has condemned acts by its followers who paraded a coffin covered with Malawi Congress Party MCP cloth as they celebrated unofficial victory in the  Karonga North West Constituency by - election on Wednesday.

The youthful supporters, most of them clad in UTM colours also carried a black cock which symbolizes the oldest political party in the country following the early victory of Felix Kaira who represented UTM.

UTM Party Spokesperson Frank Mwenifumbo says the act is uncalled for, describing it as being  violent and should not  be tolerated.

``That did not please us, because this was a celebration by UTM and we did not mean in any way to demean any party that participated in the elections. And as far as UTM is concerned we do not believe in that spirit,” said Mwenefumbo.

Political Analyst George Phiri while applauding the condemnation has advised President Lazarus Chakwera, to lead the Tonse Alliance in totality and not just Malawi Congress Party which he represents in the alliance if such acts are to be dealt with.

Said Phiri: ``Other than remaining silent, the Tonse leadership should come out and defuse the current tension which is fueling such acts”.

Of late there have been concerns with some political parties in the Tonse alliance of being sidelined in the work the alliance is doing in the country.
