Delays to Open Likoma Constituency College Angers Young Islanders

Young people on Likoma Island will wait a little longer to start acquiring technical skills  as the districts’ Water Users Association is delaying to connect piped water to the just constructed Constituency Technical College in the district.
The utility body has been contracted to connect piped water system to Likoma Constituency technical College. The institution is aimed at providing education opportunity to the youth in the district access various vocational skills.
Youth representative to the district council, MacFallen Mafuta, believes young people in the district will continue  struggling to access technical skills.
"Delaying to open the College is affecting youths in the districts as they cannot compete on the job market. Some of our friends in other districts, have benefited a lot from these constituency Colleges who have gained skills,” says McFallen.
The Water Users Association has told Zodiak Online that it is failing to connect their pipes because the learning facility was built at a hilly area; relatively higher above the sea level.
Association’s Chairperson, Alexander Chitanda, added the development is affecting pressure of water from the intake to the building.
Zodiak understands that the matter centers on the land wrangle at a place where the College is constructed as family members who owned the land are accusing Traditional Authority Mkumpha III who had interest on the project, did not share compensation money from the government.
Said Mkumpha III, when contacted, ``the matter is now history, following high court intervention in 2017 which ruled in favour of the project.
At the yet to be opened College, there are training equipment such as sewing machines that are stocked in classrooms.
Speaking in a full council meeting held on Thursday, council chairperson Ernest Gulu promised to the youths that he will make follow up with the secretariat to map the way forward.
