Protect Babies at Mphompha Health Center in Rumphi, Expert Tells Govt

Hospital In-charge for Mphompha Health Center in Rumphi, Kumbukani Kasiyamaliro has confirmed to us that they female patients suffering from other diseases are being accommodated in a maternity ward due to lack of space at the facility.

`Of course there is that arrangement. It is however, unfortunate because the newly born babies are being exposed to infections,” says Kasiyamaliro.

When Zodiak online visited the facility, it discovered that male and female patients are also sharing  the only waiting room at the center thereby compromising their privacy.

Kasiyamaliro adds that, `` there is nothing that we can do”.

The health center has a catchment area of about 18,000 people. On average at least 70 people access medical services at the center daily.

In an interview with ZBS, Health Expert Mphatso Ngulube has cautioned authorities to tread carefully to protect newborns from mixing with adults.

`` This is the time for government to revisit its health care systems as patients suffering from other ailments are not supposed to be mixing with just born babies for example.

Mphomba health center was constructed in 1980s.
