First Lady Monica Chakwera courts Malawians In Diaspora On Social Work

The first lady, Monica Chakwera says Malawi should have laws for Social Workers that can protect and promote the rights of professionals who work with their clients like street-connected children and victims of gender-based violence.

She said this during a Zoom meeting with local and international stakeholders on social work aimed at promoting the sector in the country.

``I will be meeting Minister of Gender, Community Development and Social Welfare to drum up support for this bill so that our members of parliament can pass it into law,” said Chakwera.

She disclosed that being a graduate of Social Work and Accounting studies she would like to be affiliated with professional bodies, such that once Malawi has this law, she will be a happy person to work with people who know what is happening.

Said Chakwera: "This simply means, professional social workers, will be offering quality care to their clients while protecting their rights"

The bill once enacted it allow the establishment of the Social Workers Council that would regulate professionalization

Secretary for the Association of Social Work in Malawi, Stephano Joseph said emphasized the need to harmonize social work in the country a thing that would help to promote the sector to international standards.

``People just wake up and say they are social workers. We need to protect this profession and our clients at all cost,” noted Joseph.

Joseph capitalized on the event to ask Chakwera to champion the country's Social Work so that the activities that are being implemented should match international standards.

A UK-based Social work Consultant, Anstance Chunda Fometu who hosted the meeting feels Malawi has the potential to enhance the impact of social work, only if activities are well-coordinated and run professionally.

Said Fometu: `` We need to bring in various players in the sector for sound results. We should widely consult the academia and other players, for example.

Fometu is the Chairperson of a project which is supporting social work in Malawi under a charitable organization based in the UK called Children and families international foundation.
