Health Centre Stays Idle For 5 Yrs in Karonga

Despite government policy stating that people should access health services within a walkable distance, the situation is different to the people of Thawiro as they have to travel a distance of over 10kms in search of health services to Nyungwe health centre.

This is happening against a background that the council constructed a facility with funding from District Development Fund in 2016.

However, lack of running water is delaying the opening of the facility.

Senior Chief Mwilang'ombe of the area told us that government should treat the matter with urgency saying in some instances expectant women deliver on their way before reaching the nearest facility.

"We urge government to swiftly intervene by connecting water to the health centre, otherwise more lives will be lost," lamented Mwilang'ombe.

On his part,Member of Parliament for Karonga Nyungwe Constituency Kenneth Ndovie says the facility will be opened soon as the installation of the gravity fed piped water system will be completed in the next two weeks.

"As ADC we resolved to tap resources from the Borehole Fund to assist the installation of piped water," said Ndovie.

Currently,Karonga district has a total of 21 health facilities.
