At least one hundred and twenty-five students are on the verge of withdrawing while sixty-eight have been removed from Mzuzu University this school academic alone due to financial woes like school fees.

University’s Communications Manager Cliff Kawanga has told us that there is need of K50 million if 125 students are to stay on campus.

``So, Mzuzu University Vice-Chancellor, Professor Kalenga Saka, and some members of staff of the institution will this Saturday walk for these needy students,” says Kawanga.

On average, Mzuzu University enrolls 1,000 students per academic year. Of these, a maximum of 200 students find problems in paying school fees. It is reported that 68 needy students have already withdrawn from the university due to the same problem.

Explained Kawinga, apart from this initiative, the School also has a Trust Fund which is implementing other fundraising activities for needy students who are not able to pay their school fees at the University.

In 2015, Parliament put in place Higher Education Students Loans Board to finance access to higher education for needy and deserving students in Malawi.

Loans Board Acting Chief Executive Officer, Prince Mphwetekere was not immediately available for comment but Education analysts, Dr. Steve Sharra suggest the Board should fully scrutinize its roles so that more students from public universities are not withdrawn.

Observed Dr. Shara: ``there are several issues that should happen for this board to be effective. For example, it should reposition its activities to benefit more students.

The big walk will be held in Mzuzu city this Saturday.
