Mzuzu Residents Happy with Extra Constituencies

Some people in Mzuzu have expressed satisfaction with the Malawi Electoral Commission’s - MEC decision to add two more constituencies in the city.

This means Mzuzu will now have three constituencies which some residents say will help to develop the city.

Mzuzu City Member of Parliament, Bennex Mwamlima indicated that there will be more allocation for various developmental projects in the city.

``This has really come at the right time because the city is now getting forty million kwacha. Now for three constituencies, the city will be getting 120 million kwacha,” Noted Mwamlima.

On Monday, MEC organized an interface meeting with various stakeholders in Mzuzu to get their views on the demarcation exercise of the city.

MEC Commissioner, Dr. Anthony Mukumbwa says the decision came about as the estimated number of voters in the city by 2025 will be around 150 thousand people.

Said Dr. Mukumbwa: ``We are anticipating that each constituency shall have at least fifty thousand eligible voters. There are a few things we need to sort out in terms of boundaries but so far so good,’’ said Mukumbwa

Meanwhile, MEC is waiting for parliament to allow it to gazette the demarcated constituencies. This however will depend on population figures from the National Statistics population survey which is done every 10 years.
