NGO Worried with Number of Men Shunning Family Planning Methods

A survey by the White Ribbon Alliance Malawi has revealed that only 2 percent of the men population in the country are accessing modern family planning methods saying this may have negative effects on population growth in the country.

Executive Director of the Alliance Hester Mkwanda Nyasulu has attributed this to the segregation of men and boys in family planning campaigns.

``It’s time for us as a country to start focusing on men and boys so that they start accessing these modern family planning methods as a measure of controlling population growth in the country,” says Nyasulu.

Despite Malawi recording huge strides in meeting its Family Planning goals in 2020 where the number of additional users of modern contraceptives increased by 993,833 against a target of 1,760,000, only a few men are accessing family planning services

In a separate interview, the Family Planning Association of Malawi Executive Director Donald Makwakwa says this may be due to a few methods of family planning that target men and boys.

``There are at least two methods of family planning for men and boys. And these are Condoms and Vasectomy. This is contrary to women who have methods of family planning. Moving forward there is a need for massive awareness for men and boys to start using these methods,” noted Makwawa.

The White Ribbon Alliance has created a dashboard for ease of use by those seeking family planning information which is linked with the Ministry of Health.
