NGO Board, CONGOMA Shelves Operations of CSOs in Mzimba

The NGO Board and Council for Non-Governmental organizations in Malawi have ordered the Mzimba Civil Society Organizations Network to immediately stop working in the district accusing it of being in disrepute with the M'Mbelwa district council.

NGO Board's Executive Director, Voice Mhone says the network has for the past two years failed to respect rule of law under the local council.

``Leadership of the Mzimba Civil Society Organizations Network has for many occasions failed to comply with what it is directed to do. For example, it has been working with unregistered non-governmental organizations which is against the law,” disclosed Mhone.

The Board and CONGOMA have therefore directed that there should be new leadership of the Network within 14 days from Monday, this week.

Explained Mhone: ``This arrangement will ensure that work of non-governmental organizations is more effective in the district because there will be a cordial relationship with the council.”

But Chairperson of the Network Teckson Amadu has vowed not to respect the regulator's decision arguing that they don't serve the two institutions but people on the ground.

``We are serving people with various needs. We will continue serve them the way we are doing,” Said Amadu.

In 2018 alone NGOs invested K11 billion in Mzimba district.
