21 Villages Benefit from Solar Powered Piped Water in Rumphi

Communities in 21 villages in the area of Traditional Authority Mwalweni and Chikulamayembe in Rumphi are excited with the coming of the solar powered piped water under Transform Programme in the area.

Speaking on Tuesday during a media tour Group village headman Mwagongwe in the area told Zodiak that the piped water is significant to the communities.

"For decades we have been drinking water from swamps and wells with wild animals, life was never easy for us," explained Mwagongwe.

Mwagongwe added that before the coming of piped water diarrhea related diseases were common in his area.

Speaking on behalf of Norwegian Church Aid and Dan Church Aid joint country Malawi Programme and the Development fund of Norway who are supporting the programme, Value Chain Specialist, Elube Kanyenda Kasinja said that the aim of the programme is to ensure communities have access to portable water.

"We want to make sure that communities are using clean water all the time," said Kasinja.

Apart from supporting water project in TA Mwalweni, the programme is also supporting construction of modern toilets for girls at Kapyola Mbavi primary school in the district.

The five-year programme is targeting over 150 000 in Rumphi, Dowa, Kasungu, Mchinji and Mzimba

The programme is also aiding Nutrition and hygiene interventions in Early Childhood Development centres in all these districts.
