Mzuzu Police spokesperson Inspector Paul Tembo, has told Zodiak Thursday that criminal activities in the city have decreased by at least 2 percent while road accidents have increased by 16%.

Police in Mzuzu say, compared to last year, the city has this year registered a decrease in criminal activities while road accidents continue to be on a rise an issue they say is worrisome.

A spokesperson for Mzuzu Police Inspector Paul Tembo has told Zodiak Online that the city has registered a decline in criminal activities by at least 2 percent.

Tembo was speaking following an arrest of 2 criminals over the weekend who were found in possession of various electronic items.

He says the decline comes as a result of continued police patrol in the city.

However, despite the positive outlook on criminal activities, Tembo says the city has registered an increase in road accidents by 16% mostly due to over speeding.

Said Tembo, “In terms of crime in general we have slightly reduced by a margin of almost 2 percent. Road accidents, unfortunately, have registered an increase because of various factors.”

However, Road safety specialist Harvey Mjojo says leniency by police to enforce road laws and also minimal use of equipment to control speeding on the road is a bigger contributing factor to the increased road accidents.

“We are a bit weak in the area of enforcement in this country. If drivers were overspeeding and then probably we have enough speed cameras,” I don’t think it should be a factor. Those patrol vehicles are also supposed to go round in the streets, the patrol vehicles are supposed to patrol,” said Mjojo.

Police have managed to recover electronic items worth over 15 million kwacha.
