Gonapamuhanya Cultural Festival Cancelled Again

Chairperson for the organising committee of the Tumbuka cultural annual festival Gonapamuhanya in Rumphi, Group village headman Mchinanguwo says the event which was expected to take place tomorrow has been shifted to 19 November.

Speaking to Zodiak on Friday, GVH Mchinanguwo says the decision of changing the date was to allow Tumbuka traditional leaders in the district support the Chiwanja Cha Ayao cultural event in Mangochi scheduled tomorrow as well.

He added that the idea is to allow two tribes support one another through their cultural festivals.

"We received an invitation from the organisers of the Chiwanja Cha Ayao, to allow our leaders attend the event and we could not turn them down," explained Mchinanguwo.

He says the changing of the dates has given them enough opportunity for holding a colourful event.

Commenting on the Rumphi district council's order of not feasting at public gatherings due to cholera outbreak in the district, GVH Mchinanguwo says the committee will engage health authorities on the matter.

The Gonapamuhanya cultural festival was supposed to take place in September but due to financial crisis it was changed to 22 October and now in November.

This is an annual event where Tumbuka people in Rumphi celebrate and showcase their culture and traditional dances.
