Hara made the assertions in the district earlier in the week after touring the facility where he found that the passenger bay, the warehouse and the temporary jetty which Mota Engil constructed a couple of years ago were poorly designed and in bad shape.

Hara says there is nothing admirable that Mota Engil Malawi can show from the facilities hence government will seriously engage the company to take over the management of the port.

"What I have seen here…. I think there is no proper port management here. The port is dilapidating day in day out and from here I think government will engage Mota Engil in a very serious discussion to repossess the port because I am very furious about this,” said Hara.

However, Public Relations and Media Manager for Mota Engil Malawi Thomas Chafunya says the company is still committed to providing safe and quality marine services to people who use water transport.

He said for government to repossess the facility there must be mutual understanding that both government and the investor have an obligation in running it.

Chafunya said, "we are very grateful that the minister of transport is keen to learn new things everywhere he is but it works on a balance. Every business we are getting into, there is an obligation that government has to take into account and the investor also has an obligation to take into account too so this is a balanced equation."

Mota Engil has a contract with the Malawi government to manage the country’s water vessels and ports on Lake Malawi under a joint firm called Malawi Shipping Company.
